I have always been a creative person, except when it
comes to writing, so I will try to
keep this so called bio rather short and to the point.
Personal:
I grew up in Seattle, Washington.
My husband, the love of my life, is a US Soldier, and we have
traveled the world together, Paris France being one of our favorites.
Education:
BFA
Mask Making:
I could tell you a very long and drawn out story of how I became a
leather mask sculptor,
but the simple truth of it is that I saw one many years ago (by a leather mask artist
named
John Flemming), was captivated by it, and knew exactly what I wanted to do. The not so
simple part was learning how to create them.
In the beginning, I could not find any information on the process and
had absolutely no
leather working knowledge. I researched what I could and slowly taught myself, improving
my skills along the way. I have been sculpting leather masks for several years now and
will
probably continue to do so for many, many more.
Why did I choose leather as a Medium? Well,,, it was a logical choice.
The characteristics,
the textual aspects of leather made the decision very easy. I also sculpt metal and
acrylic
(Plexiglas), but for mask making I think I will stick with leather for now. In the future,
metal
and acrylic may creep its way into a few of my mask designs, but maybe not.
I don't like to think of myself as an Artist, only an aspiring Artist.
I create my masks with
the sole intent to create, not necessarily to sell. Life though, and the corporate world
we live
in makes it impossible to support such an endeavor, not to mention myself, without price
tags.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy my work and that it somehow inspires you.
Best Regards,
Morgan Hersey
